US TRADE DEFICIT WIDENS TO $105.6BN IN AUGUST

The US trade deficit widened to $105.6 billion in August, according to the Commerce Department, as imports rose 4.3% during the month. The figure represented a 13.7% increase from July and exceeded the consensus estimate of $102 billion compiled by Dow Jones. Commerce Department data showed it was the largest monthly deficit since March 2025, which was recorded shortly before President Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs against US trading partners. Bloomberg reported that the widening gap followed a surge in inbound shipments of capital goods, which pushed imports to a record level. The Commerce Department linked part of the import increase to goods connected to the artificial intelligence sector, alongside the effects of fluctuating import tariffs.

Despite the monthly rise, the Commerce Department reported that the year-to-date deficit stood at $138.2 billion, down almost 20% compared with the same period last year. The August figure marks the steepest single-month imbalance recorded since the deficit reached an all-time high in March 2025. That earlier spike came just before Trump's tariff announcement, which the administration described as a "liberation day" measure targeting countries trading with the United States. The Commerce Department's monthly trade report tracks the difference between the value of goods and services the US imports and those it exports.

The Commerce Department is expected to continue publishing monthly trade figures that reflect the ongoing impact of tariff policy on import volumes. Bloomberg's analysis tied the record import level directly to capital goods shipments, suggesting business investment flows contributed significantly to the August figure. Commerce Department officials have not indicated when or whether the year-to-date deficit reduction trend will continue. The data covers trade activity through August, with subsequent reports expected to show whether the widened gap persists into the autumn.
