SUN 04 OCT 2026 US SPORTS

North Carolina lost 37-26 to Notre Dame on Saturday, falling to 2-2 for the season, according to NBC Sports. The result came in the second season of Bill Belichick's spell in charge of the Tar Heels. North Carolina returned the opening kickoff of the second half for a touchdown to cut Notre Dame's lead to 21-20, the report said. Notre Dame then pulled away, extending its advantage to 37-20 with seven minutes remaining before the game finished 37-26. The defeat follows an earlier loss to Clemson this season, NBC Sports reported.

Following the game, Belichick took part in a reunion of the New York Giants' 1986 team, revisiting what CBS Sports described as one of his biggest moments in the NFL. On the sidelines during the Notre Dame game, Jordon Hudson was seen wearing one of Belichick's championship rings while dressed in a pink outfit, according to Sportskeeda. Sportskeeda reported that the match was North Carolina's fourth game of its 2026 season. NBC Sports noted that Belichick won two AFC Championship games with the New England Patriots, in 2001 and 2004.

North Carolina is due to play Pitt next Saturday at Acrisure Stadium, the venue of those two AFC Championship victories, with Pitt entering the fixture at 5-0, NBC Sports reported. After that, the Tar Heels are scheduled to face Duke, Syracuse, Miami, Connecticut, Louisville, Virginia and NC State to complete the regular season, according to the report.
