PATRIOTS DEFEAT BILLS 29-26 AS ALLEN INTERCEPTION ENDS COMEBACK
The New England Patriots defeated the Buffalo Bills 29-26 on Sunday in Week 4, handing Buffalo its first loss of the season and leaving the team with a 3-1 record. Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen threw a fourth-quarter interception that ended the Bills' final attempt at a comeback. Patriots safety Craig Woodson made the interception, his first regular-season pick and second of his career. Some social media users criticised Allen after the match, with some accusing him of feigning an injury during the game for his own benefit and describing his conduct as "disgusting". Former NFL player and ex-ESPN analyst Ryan Clark said on social media that the result should serve as a "wake-up call" for Allen and the Bills.
Buffalo had taken a 26-21 lead with around six minutes remaining after Allen threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Keon Coleman, but the Bills failed to convert the two-point attempt that followed. New England responded with a touchdown pass from quarterback Drake Maye to Efton Chism III, followed by a successful two-point conversion that put the Patriots back in front. Buffalo had a further possession to try to reclaim the lead. Under pressure, Allen threw a pass that Woodson intercepted, ending Buffalo's response.
Clark said Allen had made other decisions earlier in the season that had not cost Buffalo, citing the team's 36-31 win over the Houston Texans in the season opener, when a deep pass from Allen landed in the hands of Texans cornerback Kamari Lassiter, who failed to hold on to it. Clark also referred to turnovers by Allen in Buffalo's Week 3 meeting with the Los Angeles Chargers, saying quarterback Justin Herbert did not capitalise on the chance. He said the Patriots game was the mistake that "bites Buffalo in the butt" after those earlier near-misses. The Bills stand at 3-1 for the season following the result.
