TOM CRUISE'S DIGGER OPENS WITH $8M US BOX OFFICE WEEKEND

SUN 04 OCT 2026 FILM

Tom Cruise's black comedy Digger earned an estimated $8 million from 3,321 cinemas across North America over its opening weekend, according to figures reported by Variety. The film, directed by Alejandro Iñárritu, had a production budget of between $160 million and $180 million. Box office analysts had forecast an opening of $18 million to $20 million, but told Variety a film of this scale needed nearer $40 million to justify its cost. Cruise plays a powerful oil tycoon confronting an environmental disaster. The film opened in fifth place in the North American box office rankings.

Digger debuted behind Verity, a psychological thriller starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson based on a novel by Colleen Hoover, which took an estimated $33 million, according to the New York Times. Reviews of Digger have been mixed. One critic, Clarisse Loughrey, awarded the film two stars, writing that it promised a "revelation" performance from Cruise but largely returns to the kind of work he did before his run of action films. Another critic, Jacob Stolworthy, called it a "big swing" that "grabbed my attention." A reviewer for Variety, Owen Gleiberman, wrote that the film "isn't funny."

Cruise has said he remains proud of the film following its weak opening and mixed critical reception, according to reports. The result adds to a difficult run for Warner Bros in 2026, with none of the studio's releases this year grossing more than $100 million domestically. Two of its earlier 2026 releases, Supergirl and The Bride, also recorded substantial losses. Digger's takings fell well short of both the studio's original projections and the figure analysts said was required to recoup its budget.
