WAKEFIELD TRINITY BEAT WARRINGTON TO WIN SUPER LEAGUE GRAND FINAL
Wakefield Trinity beat Warrington Wolves 23-10 in the Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford to win the title for the first time since 1968, according to BBC Sport. Tries from Cameron Scott, Isaiah Vagana, Jazz Tevaga and Tom Johnstone, along with three goals from Jowitt and a drop goal from Jack Sinfield, gave Wakefield a commanding lead. Warrington's scoring came from two tries by Arron Lindop and a goal from Irwin. Sky Sports corroborated the result, reporting the victory as Wakefield Trinity's first Super League championship in the club's history. Daryl Powell's side led 19-0 at half-time, having dominated the opening period at Old Trafford.
Wakefield were playing in their first ever Grand Final, having been in the Championship as recently as two years ago, according to BBC Sport. The club was relegated from Super League in 2023 before securing promotion back through the IMG grading system after winning the Championship play-off final. BBC Sport reported that Wakefield finished sixth in the table last year and improved by two places this season before beating Leigh Leopards and then Wigan Warriors in the play-offs to reach the final. The report said Wakefield overturned Wigan on the Warriors' own ground in the semi-final, a result described as having surprised observers across the sport. Warrington had earlier progressed past Leeds Rhinos to reach the final, per BBC Sport.
BBC Sport reported that Wakefield carried momentum from their semi-final win into the final, extending a scoring streak to 52 unanswered points across the two matches before Warrington responded. Johnstone had an earlier try disallowed following a television review before Wakefield's scoring resumed, according to the report. Lindop's second-half try briefly narrowed the gap for Warrington, but Wakefield's lead proved decisive. BBC Sport quoted coach Daryl Powell as having challenged his players before the final to secure what he described as legendary status for the club.
