GRADUATE JAMES KEEPING DIES AT FAMILY FARM AFTER JOB SEARCH STRUGGLE

THU 11 JUN 2026 EDUCATION

An inquest at Oxford Coroner's Court has heard that James Keeping died at his family's farm in Duns Tew, near Bicester, on 15 February. Keeping, who graduated from university in 2024, had experienced increasing mental health difficulties in the months before his death. He had visited a doctor and disclosed suicidal thoughts during that period. He died at the family's Oxfordshire farmhouse after shooting himself with an air pistol in front of his father, Simon.

The inquest heard Keeping had struggled to find meaningful employment after leaving university. He posted on LinkedIn seeking work, describing experience on earthquake relief efforts in Nepal and conservation diving projects in Mexico, and stated he was willing to learn and contribute. His father Simon, who previously ran jet wash firm Kärcher for 20 years, also posted on LinkedIn appealing for help finding his son a first role. Keeping had been drinking and was argumentative on the day he died, the inquest heard. His father told the inquest that Keeping had a tendency to become hyper-fixated on things, including an interest in air pistols and modifying them.

Keeping was born in Austin, Texas, and was adopted by Simon and Christine Keeping at an early age. He achieved A-levels in politics, economics, and drama. The inquest, heard at Oxford Coroner's Court, continues.
