SWIATEK AND SABALENKA WIN OPENING MATCHES AT CHINA OPEN

Iga Swiatek beat home wildcard Xinyu Gao 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of the China Open in Beijing, needing 87 minutes and five breaks of serve to secure victory. Aryna Sabalenka, the World No. 2, won her opening match 6-1, 6-3 against Renata Zarazua in 63 minutes, firing 11 aces and converting four of eight break points while Zarazua failed to win a single service break. Swiatek described the contest afterwards as "a solid match" featuring "many long rallies", adding that it had helped her "get the rhythm of the court" on a good start to the tournament. Sabalenka's win marked her first match since losing the US Open final to Elena Rybakina, who also overtook her at the top of the world rankings.

Swiatek, who won the China Open in 2023 and was previously ranked world No. 1, has not won a Grand Slam title this season for the first time since 2021, having been eliminated from the US Open by Qinwen Zheng in the fourth round. The victory over Gao was her 37th of the 2026 season and sends her into the third round in Beijing. Sabalenka has also gone without a Grand Slam title this year and said she had found it difficult to control her frustration on court. "I always ask and wait for more from myself, sometimes it can drive me forward, but sometimes it can really drain my energy," she said, adding that she was "trying so hard sometimes to be easier" on herself. The result extended her record in Masters 1000 tournaments, where she has won 11 titles and a win-loss record of 154-54, matching Kim Clijsters' win rate in the category.

Swiatek will next face Donna Vekic, who beat China's Lin Zhu 6-4, 6-2 in the first round and has lost all four previous meetings against the Pole. Sabalenka will play Nikola Bartunkova in the second round. Bartunkova beat Magdalena Frech 6-2, 6-2 in her opening match in Beijing. The pair met previously at the Berlin Open in June, when Sabalenka recovered from losing the first set to beat Bartunkova 2-6, 7-6, 6-4.
