ISRAELI AIR ATTACK ON GAZA CITY APARTMENT KILLS AT LEAST FIVE
An Israeli air attack on a residential apartment building in the Remal neighbourhood of western Gaza City has killed at least five people, according to medical staff at al-Shifa Hospital. At least six others were severely wounded and taken to the hospital for treatment. The building, named locally as the al-Asala building, was struck early on Saturday without prior warning. Remal is described as one of Gaza City's most crowded residential areas, home to thousands of displaced people sheltering in makeshift camps. Reports gave differing accounts of the identities of those killed: one said the dead included four women, among them an elderly Christian woman and her daughter, while another said they included three women and a young girl.
The attack took place in the middle of the night while residents were asleep, according to a journalist reporting from the area. Witnesses said fighter jets were heard growing louder before three strikes hit the apartment, killing those inside. The strike penetrated the targeted flat and tore through the floors below, causing further damage throughout the multi-storey building. Fires broke out and burned for roughly an hour before Palestinian Civil Defence crews extinguished them. Civil defence teams continued searching the rubble for missing people and bodies, while Israeli drones and fighter jets continued flying over the area.
The strike adds to a wider toll reported since Israel and other parties agreed a ceasefire and captive exchange in October 2025. According to one report, the number of Palestinians killed in near-daily Israeli attacks on Gaza since that agreement had reached 1,441 as of the preceding Friday, with more than 5,030 people wounded. Search efforts at the al-Asala building site were ongoing, with civil defence crews yet to confirm whether further bodies remained buried beneath the rubble.
