DAWN STALEY SUPPORTS RAVEN JOHNSON AFTER PUBLIC APOLOGY
Indiana Fever guard Raven Johnson posted a public apology on X after comments in a postgame interview drew attention, following her side's Game 2 play-off defeat to the Las Vegas Aces. Johnson had appeared alongside team-mate Myisha Hines-Allen discussing an altercation between Aces forward A'ja Wilson and a Fever fan during the match. Dawn Staley, who coached both players at the University of South Carolina, quoted Johnson's apology on X, saying she was "owning this moment" by addressing the issue publicly. Staley added that Johnson's former team-mates at South Carolina would continue to support her.
The altercation happened with four minutes ten seconds left in Game 2. Wilson, who had earlier been in a physical exchange with Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, responded after a fan shouted and pointed at her, prompting team-mates and security to intervene. Officials gave Wilson a technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct; the fan was escorted away but returned to their seat later in the match. The Fever said the fan had not breached the team's code of conduct. Aces coach Becky Hammon said such a reaction from Wilson was unusual, suggesting the fan's comments must have been disrespectful. Wilson said she responds the same way regardless of what is said if a man approaches her while pointing.
Staley led South Carolina to its first national championship in 2017 during Wilson's four seasons with the programme, and later coached Johnson to two championships in five seasons there. The Aces beat the Fever 94-83 in Game 2, eliminating Indiana from the play-offs in the first round. Staley's public message underlined her continuing connection to both players from their time at South Carolina. No further disciplinary action against Wilson or the fan has been reported.
