ENGLAND NAME ODI SQUAD FOR PAKISTAN TRI-SERIES WITHOUT BUTTLER
England have named their one-day international squad for a tri-series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, with Jos Buttler ruled out through a hamstring injury and Jofra Archer rested to manage his workload after a busy summer. The series begins in Pakistan on 18 October, with two matches against each side before the final at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on 31 October. Buttler sustained his injury during England's recent series against Sri Lanka. The squad is captained by Harry Brook.
Adil Rashid returns after recovering from a hand injury that kept him out of the wins over Sri Lanka, and Sam Curran is back after a groin injury. Glamorgan leg-spinner Mason Crane, uncapped in the ODI format, has been called up eight years after his previous England appearance in the 2018 Ashes series in Sydney. Sussex pair James Coles and Henry Crocombe, who featured in England's white-ball squads over the summer without making their debuts, have also been included. Joe Root remains part of the squad. England beat Sri Lanka 3-0 in a T20 series and 2-1 in an ODI series last month.
England selector Marcus North said the tri-series offers the ODI squad a valuable opportunity to test themselves against quality opposition in different conditions. North said Rashid and Curran return to the squad following their injuries, while Archer has been rested to manage his workload after a busy summer. He added that Crane has been performing consistently for Glamorgan across both formats during the summer. England are due to play two matches each against Pakistan and Sri Lanka before the tri-series final in Lahore on 31 October.

Note: Report A (Nico O'Reilly's injury withdrawal from the England football squad) and Report B (the England cricket ODI squad for the Pakistan/Sri Lanka tri-series) are not the same event — they're unrelated stories in different sports. I wrote the article above from Report B only, since synthesising the two would have produced a factually incoherent piece. Flagging in case the source pairing needs correcting upstream.
