WOMAN INDICTED OVER SHOOTING AT RIHANNA'S BEVERLY HILLS HOME
A grand jury has indicted Ivanna Lisette Ortiz on charges of attempted murder and more than a dozen other felonies over a shooting at a Beverly Hills-area property belonging to Rihanna and A$AP Rocky, according to the indictment. Authorities allege Ortiz, a Florida resident, drove a Tesla from Orlando to the property on 8 March, pointed an AR-15-style rifle out of the window and fired at least 20 rounds towards the house and a neighbouring property. The indictment states a bullet struck an Airstream trailer the couple were inside, while a nursery where their three young children were with a nanny was also hit. No one was injured. Rihanna's mother and several staff members were reportedly also in the home at the time.
Ortiz was originally charged in March with attempted murder and more than a dozen other felony counts, to which she pleaded not guilty. The case was then paused for several months while she underwent psychiatric evaluation, with reports on her mental state sealed from public discussion. A judge found her mentally competent to stand trial a day before the new indictment was unsealed on Wednesday. During that period, prosecutors held secret grand jury proceedings, which allowed them to bypass California's preliminary hearing process requiring evidence to be presented publicly. The new indictment supersedes the original charges. Investigators said Ortiz told them after her arrest, "I wasn't attempting murder."
Prosecutors have not stated a motive or described any known connection between Ortiz, described as a longtime licensed speech pathologist with no prior criminal record, and Rihanna. Ortiz faces life in prison if convicted on all counts, following the secret proceedings that have fast-tracked the case towards trial. Separate reporting states Ortiz also faces ten counts of assault with an assault weapon and three counts of shooting at an inhabited dwelling or camper. No trial date has been confirmed in the material reviewed.
