PISTONS DROP WEIGHT CLAUSE FROM JALEN DUREN CONTRACT OFFER

WED 30 SEP 2026 US SPORTS

The Detroit Pistons have removed a weight clause from their five-year, $200 million contract offer to Jalen Duren, according to The Athletic. The clause had never been formally written into the contract terms but had reportedly affected the tone of negotiations between the team and Duren's camp. Duren must decide by 11:59pm ET on Thursday whether to accept Detroit's fully guaranteed offer or sign a one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer that would make him an unrestricted free agent next summer. League sources cited in the report said the clause was dropped specifically to reset relations as the deadline approaches. Duren is eligible for a five-year maximum contract worth $287 million.

Duren and his camp reportedly objected to scrutiny over his weight being raised as a condition of the contract. In the 2025-26 season, Duren averaged career-high figures of 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2 assists and 0.8 blocks per game on 65% shooting across 70 appearances, and finished 11th in Defensive Player of the Year voting. He also received his first All-Star and All-NBA selections. According to multiple reports, Duren's camp has pointed to Houston centre Amen Thompson's five-year, $208 million extension as a benchmark it wants Duren's deal to exceed.

The Athletic's report noted that none of the 43 players who have accepted a qualifying offer since 1999 has gone on to make an All-NBA or All-Star team, a distinction Duren already holds. Even if Duren signs the qualifying offer and secures a four-year maximum contract elsewhere next summer, he would earn only marginally more over five seasons than by accepting Detroit's current offer, the report said. The outcome of the standoff is expected to be determined when the Thursday deadline passes.
