GLOBAL MIGRATION TRIPLES SINCE 2000 AS DISPLACEMENT HITS 118 MILLION

THU 11 JUN 2026 INTERNATIONAL

Total global migration has nearly tripled in the two decades since 2000, with 35 million people now relocating every year, according to a new study. Separately, the United Nations refugee agency has reported that nearly 118 million people were displaced by conflict or persecution last year. Forced displacement fell in 2025 for the first time in a decade, the UN agency confirmed. The two findings together offer a broad picture of large-scale human movement across the globe.

The UN refugee agency tracks forced displacement as distinct from broader migration figures, covering people uprooted by conflict or persecution rather than those who relocate voluntarily or for economic reasons. The 35 million annual relocations recorded in the wider migration study represent a near-tripling of the figure recorded at the start of the century. The decline in forced displacement recorded in 2025 marks a significant reversal after ten consecutive years of increases. The UN agency did not specify which conflicts or regions drove the overall reduction.

The convergence of these two datasets illustrates the scale at which human populations are moving globally, whether by force or by choice. The break in the decade-long upward trend in forced displacement represents a measurable shift in the data tracked by the UN refugee agency. The broader migration study confirms that voluntary and mixed-motive movement has grown substantially as a parallel phenomenon. Both sets of findings are expected to inform international policy discussions on migration, refugee protection, and humanitarian response.
