INDIANA FEVER LOSE 102-85 TO LAS VEGAS ACES IN PLAY-OFF OPENER
Indiana Fever lost 102-85 to the Las Vegas Aces in Game 1 of their play-off series, played in front of the Aces' home crowd. Indiana were the lower seed against Las Vegas, the defending WNBA champions. WNBA analyst Rachel DeMita said on the Courtside Club podcast that there was "no excuse" for the performance, given that two Fever players are regarded as MVP candidates and first-team All-WNBA selections. Fever head coach Stephanie White said afterwards that her team needed to be "humbled" in order to learn. DeMita criticised White's comments on the social media platform X, saying the team's best chance in the series had been to win Game 1.
Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell, both named to the All-WNBA team this season, are among the league's top three scorers. Aliyah Boston is regarded as one of the league's leading two-way players. Indiana had the best offensive rating in the league this season, at 96.0, with Las Vegas second on 91.5, according to figures reported after the game. DeMita said the Fever should be competing to win the series, not facing a heavy defeat, given the strength of that roster. She said Indiana had pushed the Aces to the brink of elimination in last season's play-offs despite Clark, Sophie Cunningham and other players being unavailable through injury.
Sports analyst Jason Whitlock also criticised the Fever, saying Clark "needs to humble herself" while endorsing White's remarks. The comments from DeMita and Whitlock add to public scrutiny of Indiana's form as the series continues. The Fever must win two of the remaining games in the series to advance past Las Vegas. Indiana had been seen by some analysts as having a strong chance in the series, given the team's regular-season offensive form.
