MAN DIES AFTER BAG CAUGHT IN NEW YORK SUBWAY DOORS

TUE 29 SEP 2026

A man died in Brooklyn after his shopping bag became trapped in the doors of a subway train, New York police said. Officers identified the man as Yaw Boahene, 57, of Brooklyn. Police said the accident happened at approximately 6pm on Monday as he was leaving a Manhattan-bound A train at the Utica Avenue station in Bedford-Stuyvesant. According to police and a witness account reported by a US broadcaster, Boahene was dragged backward by the train, pulled between the carriages and onto the tracks as it left the station. Responding officers found him unconscious and unresponsive on the tracks, and emergency medical staff pronounced him dead at the scene.

New York's Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death, and police said their investigation is ongoing. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates the city's transit network, referred all enquiries about the death to the police department. A witness told a US broadcaster she was returning home from school when the accident happened and that people on the platform panicked as it unfolded.

Fatal dragging accidents occur periodically on the New York subway system. In 2022, a 20-year-old man died at Manhattan's Columbus Circle station after his clothing or backpack became caught in the doors of a 1 train during rush hour. The MTA has said subway customer accidents rose by 2% in 2025, but that ridership grew faster than accidents, producing a 4.7% fall in the 12-month accident rate. Police have not said whether any further action is planned beyond the ongoing investigation.
