Former NBA player J.R. Smith, whose legal first name is Earl Smith, has been arrested in Texas on a charge of assault causing bodily injury family violence. The Royse City Police Department took him into custody and booked him into the Hunt County Detention Centre, where jail records showed no bond had been set at the time of reporting. Reports differ on the date of the arrest, with one account saying Tuesday and another, citing police, saying Monday. The identity of the alleged victim has not been made public, and no further charges have been reported in connection with the case.

According to one report citing police, an automatic licence plate reader flagged the vehicle Smith was driving and alerted officers to an active warrant, prompting a traffic stop. He was then taken into custody on the family violence assault warrant before being booked into the detention centre, the report said. Smith's brother was reportedly present and took possession of the vehicle afterwards. The specific circumstances behind the warrant have not been detailed in initial reports, and no court date has been disclosed.

The arrest follows Smith's graduation in May 2026 with a bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies, concentrating in Applied Cultural Thought, from North Carolina A&T State University, after a 16-season NBA career that included the Cleveland Cavaliers and New York Knicks. He was named the university's Academic Athlete of the Year for 2021-2022 with a 4.0 grade point average and also played for the Aggies golf team. Smith said he wanted to become more "well-rounded" alongside being an athlete, adding: "I think being an athlete is just [an] attribute that you have." No further updates on the case have been reported.
