APPLE RELEASES IOS 27.0.1 TO FIX IPHONE 18 PRO RESTART BUG
Apple has released iOS 27.0.1, its first update to iOS 27, to fix a bug that caused the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max to freeze or restart without warning. According to Apple, the fault typically occurred when Face ID failed to authenticate. The update also addresses a separate fault in which a colour artefact appeared on photos taken at 2x zoom in certain lighting conditions at f/1.48, which Apple said affected a small number of 18 Pro and Pro Max handsets. A further fix resolves an issue in which opening the Notification Centre and Control Centre at the same time could leave the screen unresponsive, a bug affecting all iPhones running iOS 27. Companion updates were also issued for iPadOS, macOS and visionOS, though Apple did not detail what those updates fix. Apple's security release notes list no security patches for the update, which was released on Monday.
The fixes apply to Apple's newest phones, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, which start at $1,199 and $1,299 and went on sale this year without a lower-cost equivalent joining them for the first time. Instead, the Pro models are sold alongside the iPhone 17, the iPhone 17E and the iPhone Air, all of which received $100 price rises without any hardware changes, according to Apple's pricing. The iPhone 17E now starts at $699, the iPhone 17 at $899 and the iPhone Air at $1,099. The older iPhone 16 remains on sale at $829 for 128GB of storage. Apple is also preparing to launch the iPhone Duo, its first folding phone, on 23 October at $1,999, with a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch internal display when unfolded.
To install the update, iPhone users can go to Settings, then General, then Software Update, and tap to update, restarting the device afterwards. Apple has not said whether further updates will address other issues with iOS 27. Further iPhone models, including a rumoured iPhone 18E, iPhone 18 and a successor to the iPhone Air, are expected early next year, according to unofficial reports. For now, buyers must choose between the newly released Pro and Duo models or the year-old iPhone 17 range.
