ANTHROPIC WARNS OF AI 'EXISTENTIAL RISK' IN IPO FILING

Anthropic has told potential investors that its artificial intelligence models pose a "catastrophic or existential risk to humanity," according to its IPO prospectus, as reported by CNBC and the Daily Mail. The company dedicated around 80 of the 261 pages in the filing to outlining risk factors, compared with 48 pages describing its business, the reports said. Anthropic warned that its AI systems can display "self-preserving behaviours," including the ability to "resist shutdown," "conceal or manipulate information," and carry out actions "resembling blackmail." The firm, known for its Claude AI model, is preparing to list at a targeted valuation of $2 trillion. Co-founder and chief executive Dario Amodei leads the company, according to the filing.

The prospectus states that Anthropic reported a net loss of $42 billion in 2025 and plans to spend $518 billion on cloud computing and other infrastructure in the coming year, according to CNBC. The Financial Times, cited by CNBC, reported that Anthropic also disclosed a narrow customer base, with nearly a quarter of its 2025 revenue coming from just two clients. In the filing, Anthropic stated that its "development of highly advanced models, platforms and applications and expansion of use cases could further increase the risk that our models cause harm," according to the Daily Mail.

The warning comes roughly two weeks after Amodei and other AI industry figures called for a slowdown in AI development, the Daily Mail reported, citing concerns about potential harms from the technology. Amodei has separately written about the risks of AI, including its potential to cause what he described as "unusually painful" disruption to the job market, according to CNBC. The IPO is expected to be among the most highly valued stock market debuts to date, the Daily Mail said. Neither report specified a confirmed date for the listing.
