52 WOMEN'S NATIONAL LEAGUE CLUBS DEMAND FA VOTE ON WSL ACADEMY PLANS

THU 11 JUN 2026 W FOOTBALL

An alliance of 52 Women's National League clubs has written to the Football Association to demand a vote on plans to introduce Women's Super League academy sides into the third tier of the English women's football pyramid. The clubs represent more than a two-thirds majority within the Women's National League. Their letter marks a formal escalation of opposition to the proposals. The clubs have described feeling betrayed by the process surrounding the plans.

The proposals would see WSL academy sides admitted to the third tier of the pyramid, a level currently occupied by established Women's National League clubs. Opponents of the scheme have characterised it as a disaster waiting to happen. The 52 clubs argue the plans would damage the existing structure of the women's game in England. Their collective letter to the FA signals that resistance to the proposals extends across a significant portion of the league's membership.

The FA has received the formal written request from the coalition of clubs. The demand for a vote indicates that the clubs seek a democratic mechanism to determine the outcome of the proposals rather than a decision made without their direct input. The scale of opposition, spanning more than two-thirds of Women's National League clubs, places considerable pressure on the FA to respond. The outcome of that response will determine the next stage of the dispute over the pyramid's structure.
