BOSE LAUNCHES WIRED NOISE-CANCELLING EARBUDS WITH USB-C
Bose has announced its first wired earbuds in 11 years, called the Bose Noise Cancelling Wired Earbuds, ending a run of Bluetooth-only launches from the company since it discontinued wired options in 2015. The earbuds are priced at $99 and are available for preorder now in three colours: black, white smoke and a limited-edition shade called dewdrop mint. Bose's own release states they are expected to begin shipping on 15 October, though Bose's online store lists 13 October as the ship date. The buds connect via a USB-C cable rather than a traditional headphone jack, allowing use with modern smartphones and laptops without an adapter. They carry an IPX4 water-resistance rating, meaning they can withstand sweat, rain and splashes but not full submersion.
Two microphones on each earbud work with Bose's QuietControl technology to provide active noise cancelling, with a Quiet Mode that reduces ambient sound and an Aware Mode that boosts it, alongside an option to switch cancelling off entirely. A separate microphone built into the inline remote is designed to pick up the wearer's voice during calls without needing to sit close to the mouth. The remote also includes volume and playback controls. The cable measures 4.2 feet and is built to be thicker and more tangle-resistant than typical USB-C earbud cords, a design intended to improve durability compared with thinner cables that can pull loose from the earbuds.
The launch reflects renewed demand for wired earbuds, particularly USB-C models, among consumers seeking cheaper, plug-and-play alternatives to Bluetooth true-wireless designs that require charging. At $99, the Bose model costs more than rival USB-C earbuds such as Apple's $19 EarPods (USB-C) and Sony's $28 IER-EX15C, but adds active noise cancelling not found on those cheaper options. One reviewer awarded the earbuds a CNET Editors' Choice award, citing sound quality and build. Preorders are open through Bose's online store ahead of the announced shipping date.
