CHARLES BARKLEY DARES ESPN TO FIRE HIM OVER CARDI B REMARKS

THU 11 JUN 2026 US SPORTS

Charles Barkley has publicly challenged ESPN to dismiss him following comments he made about rapper Cardi B during the NBA Finals broadcast. Barkley made a racy joke about Cardi B's appearance at the Game 3 halftime show at Madison Square Garden, where she performed during the San Antonio Spurs versus New York Knicks fixture on Monday night. The remark drew mixed reactions on social media and left his Inside the NBA colleagues laughing on air. The following morning, Barkley appeared on The Dan Patrick Show, where he repeated the comment and escalated the situation further.

When Dan Patrick asked whether ESPN management had disciplined him, Barkley stated he was hoping the network would terminate his contract. "I got six or seven years left on my contract that they know I've got no chance of doing," Barkley said. "I would love for them to fire me and have to pay me for the next six or seven years." Barkley signed a ten-year, $210 million contract with TNT in 2022, and remained on that deal when TNT licensed Inside the NBA to ESPN after Turner lost its NBA media rights. He had previously declined a $100 million pay increase from NBC in order to stay on his existing contract.

Barkley's remarks place ESPN in a public position regarding whether to take disciplinary action against one of its highest-profile broadcasters. The NBA Finals series marks Inside the NBA's first Finals broadcast under ESPN. Barkley's contract still carries six or seven years of remaining obligations according to his own public statements. No response from ESPN has been confirmed in the available source material.
