WELSH LABOUR FIGURE SAYS PARTY MUST REBUILD AFTER MAY DEFEAT

MON 28 SEP 2026 UK POLITICS

A Welsh Labour politician addressed the party's conference in Liverpool, acknowledging that Welsh Labour suffered a defeat in Wales in May after more than two decades in government. The speaker called the result "a profound judgment" from the people of Wales and said "there is no point dressing it up." They said the defeat could not simply be patched over, and that Welsh Labour's task now was to build something new rather than reconstruct the party as it had been. The speaker said the aim was a party that is confident and exciting.

The speaker pointed to a new direct rail service between Llandudno and Liverpool introduced this year, part of a wider plan to bring north Wales and the Liverpool city region closer together. The speaker said they grew up near Mold in north Wales, where their parents met at Shotton steelworks. They added that their family once moved to Mexico when British Steel opened a facility near Acapulco, before their mother returned home to north Wales ahead of the birth. The speaker credited Keir Starmer with restoring Labour's purpose after the "devastation of 2019" and leading the party back into government.

The speaker named Eluned Morgan, Jo Stevens and Stephen Kinnock as senior figures who have served Wales, saying Kinnock now gives Wales "a fierce, trusted voice" at the Cabinet table. They also addressed Andy Burnham directly, saying he had asked the party and the country to "believe again in hope and progress." The speaker pledged that Welsh Labour would support him "every step of the way." The speaker did not announce specific policy changes or a timetable for the rebuilding effort in the address.
