COWBOYS FANS CRITICISE SCHOTTENHEIMER AFTER RAVENS DEFEAT IN BRAZIL
The Dallas Cowboys travelled to Rio de Janeiro to face the Baltimore Ravens, marking the team's first game outside the United States in more than a decade. The Ravens won the match, and fans criticised head coach Brian Schottenheimer's in-game decisions afterwards, with some supporters describing his clock management as "horrible" on social media and one fan calling it "coaching malpractice". Dallas had arrived in Brazil holding a 1-1 record for the season. Schottenheimer had decided that players' families would remain in the United States for the trip, telling reporters beforehand that it was "a business trip" built around meetings, walkthroughs and practice sessions.
While the team travelled, Schottenheimer's wife, Gemmi Schottenheimer, stayed at home unwell with flu-like symptoms. She said on Instagram that she had also had a flat tyre that weekend and that she missed her daughter, Savannah Schottenheimer, who attends Auburn University. The couple also have a son, and both their children have since left home. Gemmi has long been involved in football, having known the sport before she met Brian. Schottenheimer has said choosing the right partner is an important part of a career in football.
Schottenheimer spoke about Gemmi's role in his career at a press conference in January 2025, after he was appointed Cowboys head coach, saying he "would not be here" without her support. He described choosing a partner as "the most important decision that you make in your life" for someone working in football, and said she had been by his side through "lots of ups, lots of downs". Following the defeat to the Ravens, attention turned to Schottenheimer's coaching decisions during the game rather than the trip itself. No further comment from Schottenheimer on the Ravens defeat was included in the reports.
