BAKER MAYFIELD INJURES THUMB IN BUCCANEERS' LOSS TO VIKINGS
The Minnesota Vikings beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-16, with quarterback Baker Mayfield leaving the game late after injuring his right thumb. Mayfield was hurt when he hit his thumb against Vikings linebacker Blake Cashman while being tackled after throwing an interception, according to NBC Sports. He reportedly screamed in pain and went straight to the locker room, with rookie Jalon Daniels taking over for the Buccaneers' final snaps. Mayfield finished the game having completed 17 of 34 passes for 217 yards and one touchdown. The defeat left the Buccaneers winless after three games this season.
The Vikings' defence, led by Brian Flores, sacked Mayfield six times during the game and forced the late interception that helped secure the win, NBC Sports reported. Minnesota's offence struggled after half-time, managing only 77 yards, as quarterback Kyler Murray was sacked three times and completed 15 of 29 passes for 168 yards. Wide receiver Jordan Addison caught passes of 30 and 41 yards in the second quarter, with the longer completion producing the Vikings' only offensive touchdown of the match. Minnesota also lost wide receiver Justin Jefferson to an ankle injury in the first quarter.
The extent of Mayfield's thumb injury had not been confirmed at the time of reporting, according to NBC Sports. The Buccaneers will be awaiting further assessment of the injury as they look to respond to their 0-3 start to the season. CBS Sports separately reported that Mayfield appeared to be in serious pain following the fourth-quarter interception that preceded his injury.
