ZVEREV SEALS SIXTH LAVER CUP TITLE FOR TEAM EUROPE AT O2 ARENA
Alexander Zverev beat Learner Tien 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 on the final day of the Laver Cup at London's O2 Arena, sealing a sixth title for Team Europe. According to Sky Sports, the result completed a 13-5 victory over Team World. Zverev, the reigning US Open champion, had lost to Alex de Minaur earlier in the event but recovered to close out the tie. His win, together with an earlier doubles success, took Europe's point total to the 13 needed for outright victory, meaning Carlos Alcaraz did not have to play his scheduled final match.
Carlos Alcaraz's performance had kept Europe in contention after the defeat by De Minaur on day two, according to the BBC. Flavio Cobolli and Jakub Mensik then beat De Minaur and Taylor Fritz in the doubles to extend Europe's lead before Zverev's singles win. Tien, 20, was making his debut for Team World and held his nerve in the first set to force a tiebreak. World number two Zverev took control in the second set, closing out the match in one hour and 49 minutes.
Zverev has been part of all six of Team Europe's Laver Cup victories and holds the record for most singles wins at the event, with eight. "I haven't won a Laver Cup match in two years, so I'm happy I did it today," he said afterwards, crediting Team World for pushing Europe "all the way again" after their win the previous year. He described the result as a team effort, saying: "Winning as a team, there's no better feeling in sports. We don't have enough of it in tennis."
