SPAIN BEAT ENGLAND 3-2 IN NATIONS LEAGUE OPENER AT WEMBLEY

SAT 26 SEP 2026

Spain came from behind to beat England 3-2 at Wembley in their opening Nations League match, with substitute Mikel Oyarzabal scoring a late winner. Lamine Yamal put Spain ahead inside two minutes, before Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane scored to give England a 2-1 half-time lead. Kane then missed a penalty in the 54th minute, striking the crossbar after his standing foot slipped in the turf. Spain substitute Álex Baena equalised soon afterwards, before Oyarzabal settled the contest with a dinked finish. Thomas Tuchel's England side led at the break before conceding twice in the second half.

Jude Bellingham was England's most influential performer, driving the team forward for the full match and still creating chances in stoppage time. Spain were reported to have dominated the opening 30 minutes before England's fightback either side of half-time. The contest turned on Kane's missed penalty, after which Spain levelled through Baena and went ahead through Oyarzabal within minutes. England's defending was described as loose at times as Spain pushed for the winner.

Spain enter the competition as reigning European Champions and this summer's World Cup winners, described in the match report as the best team in international football by some distance. England are looking to move forward under Tuchel following the defeat to Argentina in the World Cup semi-final. Tuchel's name was not read out when the starting line-up and substitutes were announced before kick-off, and the Wembley crowd did not boo at the final whistle. The result leaves England without a win from their opening Nations League fixture, with no date for their next match confirmed in the report.
