BRISBANE LIONS BEAT FREMANTLE TO WIN THIRD STRAIGHT AFL FLAG
The Brisbane Lions won a third consecutive AFL premiership, beating Fremantle 14.12 (96) to 12.17 (89) in the grand final at the MCG. Brisbane trailed by 17 points late in the final quarter after Fremantle's Patrick Voss kicked a goal with four minutes remaining, triggering the club's "Wharfie Time" siren in anticipation of victory. Brisbane responded with four goals in the final four minutes, including two from Logan Morris, to snatch the win. Charlie Cameron and Zac Bailey also scored during the late surge, which cut and then overturned Fremantle's lead. It marked only the second time since 1981 that a team has won an AFL grand final after trailing at three-quarter-time, following Geelong's comeback against St Kilda in 2009.
Fremantle's Hayden Young kicked two goals late in the third quarter, including one from the boundary, to put the Dockers 10 points ahead heading into the final term. Fremantle's Josh Treacy missed a chance from the goal square during the fourth quarter before Voss's goal appeared to seal victory for the Dockers. The match opened with rain falling steadily over Melbourne after Kylie Minogue performed before the game, including her song "The Loco-Motion". Charlie Cameron scored the opening goal of the match, before Treacy responded for Fremantle. The margin stayed within a goal for the entire first quarter.
Brisbane's win completes back-to-back-to-back premierships for the club. Fremantle's players were reported to be devastated after the defeat, having appeared set to win their first flag before Brisbane's late comeback. No further fixtures or events were confirmed in the reports beyond the completion of the grand final.
