49ERS' NICK BOSA RULED OUT WITH CALF INJURY, IR STATUS UNDECIDED

SAT 26 SEP 2026 US SPORTS

The San Francisco 49ers will be without defensive end Nick Bosa for Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals after he suffered a calf injury in practice, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported. Schefter said Bosa is expected to miss several weeks. According to Schefter, the 49ers are leaning towards not placing Bosa on injured reserve, partly because the club is running low on designated return spots for players on that list. An injured reserve move would require Bosa to sit out a minimum of four games, covering matches against Arizona, Denver, Seattle and Washington. Teams are permitted only eight players on injured reserve to return during a season, and the 49ers already have 15 players on the list.

San Francisco's defensive front has been affected by several other injuries this season. Defensive tackles C.J. West and Alfred Collins, along with defensive end Sam Okuayinonu, are on injured reserve, while Andrew Farmer II and Mikail Kamara are unavailable for the season. Rookie defensive tackle James Thompson Jr. has a high ankle sprain, and Romello Height has a broken hand. Mykel Williams remains on the physically unable to perform list as he recovers from an ACL injury that ended his 2025 season, though he is expected to resume practice next week and could potentially return in Week 5. Bosa himself had only recently returned from a torn ACL sustained in Week 3 of last season against the Cardinals, which ended his 2025 campaign.

With Bosa sidelined, the 49ers have Keion White, Khalid Kareem and Ogbo Okoronkwo available at defensive end, according to the report. The team also added Naquan Jones and Viliami Fehoko Jr. to its practice squad this week. The 49ers head into the game against Arizona at 2-0 for the season. No timetable for Bosa's return beyond "a few weeks" has been given.
