NICK CHUBB TO SIGN ONE-DAY CONTRACT TO RETIRE WITH BROWNS

THU 24 SEP 2026 US SPORTS

Nick Chubb will sign a one-day contract with the Cleveland Browns on Friday to formally retire as a member of the franchise, the team announced on Thursday. Chubb first announced his retirement in August. He spent the 2025 season with the Houston Texans but played the rest of his career with the Browns, who selected him with the 35th overall pick of the 2018 draft. Chubb is scheduled to address the media in Cleveland on Friday afternoon.

Over his time with Cleveland, Chubb rushed for 6,843 yards and scored 51 touchdowns, placing him third on the franchise's all-time rushing list behind Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly, according to figures reported by NBC Sports. He is also one of only four players in NFL history to retire with an average of 5.0 yards per carry across more than 1,000 attempts, a group that includes Brown, Joe Perry and Jamaal Charles, the same figures show. His return to Cleveland for the signing marks a formal end to his playing career with the club that drafted him.

The one-day contract allows Chubb to retire officially as a Brown despite having finished his career elsewhere, a practice used by NFL teams to honour players' associations with the franchise. Cleveland has not indicated any further ceremonial plans beyond Friday's signing and media appearance. Chubb's retirement closes out a career centred on his time with the Browns, where he built the bulk of his statistical record.
