Lawrence Tanter, the Los Angeles Lakers' longtime public address announcer, has died at the age of 76, according to reports. Tanter held the role for 43 years, having begun in 1982. LeBron James, who spent eight seasons hearing Tanter announce Lakers home games, paid tribute to him on social media, writing "Rest in paradise Lawrence Tanter" and describing him as a constant presence at the scorer's table. James said Tanter's voice "echoed throughout the entire arena" and made home games "special," adding that his thoughts were with Tanter's family and loved ones.

Tanter suffered a stroke in March 2026, according to a report, which forced him to miss the Lakers' final six home games of the regular season and the team's entire playoff run. He subsequently retired from the public address role after 43 seasons. The Lakers kept him involved as an advisor for game presentations while he continued to recover. Jeanie Buss said in a statement in June that Tanter had been "an integral part of the Lakers gameday experience for more than four decades," adding that he had "narrated every chapter of Lakers basketball" since the 1980s, connecting generations of fans, players, coaches and staff.

In 2025, Tanter was at the microphone when James became the first player in NBA history to reach 50,000 combined regular-season and postseason points, telling the crowd: "Ladies and gentlemen, we all have just witnessed history." Reports said the Lakers won ten NBA titles during Tanter's tenure, and that he introduced stars including Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant and James over the decades. Shortly before entering hospice care, Tanter said his career had "been a blessing."
