GUERRERO DEFENDS $500M BLUE JAYS DEAL AMID SLUMP
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has defended his $500 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays after a sharp drop in production during the 2026 season. He recorded a .695 OPS with nine home runs this year, down from a .848 OPS and 23 homers in 2025 and a .940 OPS with 30 homers in 2024. Speaking in an interview with Veronica Batista, reported by Philip Feliz, Guerrero said his contract reflected past achievements rather than future output. "The money they gave me wasn't for what I'm going to do. It was for what I already did," he said, adding that the Blue Jays "didn't pay me to hit 40 home runs every year" but "for what I already accomplished."
Toronto agreed the fourteen-year deal with Guerrero in April 2025. By that point he had finished runner-up for the 2021 American League MVP award, batting .311 with 48 home runs and a 1.002 OPS, and had won the Hank Aaron Award, a Silver Slugger and All-Star Game MVP that year. He added a Gold Glove at first base in 2022, then rebounded in 2024 with a career-best .323 average, 30 home runs and 103 RBIs, earning a fourth consecutive All-Star selection, a second Silver Slugger and a place on the All-MLB First Team.
Data cited in reports on his 2026 season shows 56% of his hard-hit balls went to ground, up from 43% the previous year, while his hard-hit rate fell and his barrel rate was roughly halved. John Schneider said recurring lower-back tightness affected how Guerrero landed and rotated during his swing, with the issue worsening in June and flaring again in September. The Blue Jays reached the World Series in 2025 but were reported to be closing in on playoff elimination in 2026. Guerrero's comments drew a critical reaction from fans on social media, according to reports.
