STABBING AT JAROSŁAW ABBEY IN POLAND KILLS PRIEST, WOUNDS FOUR
A stabbing at a Benedictine Sisters monastery in the southeastern Polish town of Jarosław left one person dead and four others wounded on Thursday, police said. Officers said they were alerted to the attack on the abbey grounds at around 9.30am local time. Four men and a woman were stabbed, according to police. One of the men later died from his injuries, Polish news agency PAP reported. Police detained a 31-year-old foreign national as a suspect at the scene.
The injured were taken to hospital, with three of the men described as seriously hurt. Sister Barbara Dendor told state broadcaster TVP Info that the priest who died was named Father Stanisław, while another priest, named as Father Marek, remained in serious condition. She said further details of the other casualties were not yet available. Dendor described panic at the scene, saying young people who had come out of the centre had witnessed the attack and were shouting that "some madman" was responsible. Police said they had been alerted to the stabbing by a Ukrainian citizen who was present.
Police said they were investigating what had happened and had not yet established a motive for the attack. The suspect was being held while officers continued to question witnesses and gather evidence from the scene. Authorities have not said what weapon was used or given further detail on how the attack unfolded. No further information on the condition of the other three wounded victims has yet been released.
