DARRELL WALTRIP DIAGNOSED WITH FRONTOTEMPORAL DEGENERATION AND CTE

Darrell Waltrip's family said in a statement on Wednesday that the three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion has been diagnosed with Frontotemporal Degeneration, a progressive brain condition, complicated by Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, known as CTE. The family said the conditions may be linked to injuries Waltrip sustained during his racing career. His brother, Michael Waltrip, responded on the social media platform X, writing: "Prayers for these two lovebirds. Stevie and the family will be by your side, big bro. I love you." He shared the message with a photograph of Darrell Waltrip and his wife, Stevie, embracing after a race.

Frontotemporal Degeneration causes the brain's frontal and temporal lobes to shrink, affecting personality, behaviour and speech, the family said. It generally develops due to ageing, though genetics can also play a role. CTE occurs when an abnormal protein called tau builds up in the brain, gradually damaging tissue and potentially causing memory problems and physical difficulties, according to the family's statement. Waltrip competed in 809 races over 29 years in NASCAR's Cup Series. He suffered multiple head injuries during his career, including a 1983 crash at Daytona in which he struck an earthen embankment and was knocked unconscious, and a concussion sustained during practice at the same track in 1990.

The family said Waltrip is doing well and is spending time with Stevie, his two daughters and his three grandchildren. It said the condition will "inevitably progress" over time. Waltrip will step further away from public appearances as a result of the diagnosis, according to a report citing the family. Michael Waltrip said he would remain by his brother's side to support him with whatever he needs.
