VINATIERI KICKS RECORD-ALTITUDE FIELD GOAL IN SWISS ALPS

Former New England Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri has been awarded a Guinness World Record for the highest-altitude field goal, the Patriots announced on X on 22 September. The kick was taken at Jungfraujoch, known as "Top of Europe", in the Swiss Alps, at 11,332 feet (3,454 metres) above sea level, according to the Patriots' announcement. Footage released by the franchise shows Vinatieri taking a running start before the ball passed between the uprights on snow-covered ground. Former FC Bayern Munich striker Giovane Élber, described by the Patriots as the German club's brand ambassador, held the ball steady for the attempt. Wind noise distorts the audio throughout the clip shared by the Patriots.

Jungfraujoch typically records wind speeds of around 16 miles per hour, with gusts of up to 25 miles per hour, according to the report. Such conditions can make it difficult to aim and kick a ball through the uprights, the report noted. Vinatieri, a Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, spent his career kicking at the Patriots' open-air Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, where he played through heavy snow and wind. The Patriots have referenced the franchise's history in extreme winter weather, including the "Snow Plow Game" of the 1980s and the "Snow Bowl" against the Raiders in 2001. The Jungfraujoch site overlooks the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Guinness World Records attempt formed part of the Patriots' promotion for their NFL fixture against the Detroit Lions in Munich, Germany, scheduled for 15 November. The Patriots said the record-setting event will serve as the opening act for that game. The pre-game festivities are due to take place in a snowy, high-alpine setting overlooking the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site, according to the franchise. Vinatieri travelled to the Swiss Alps specifically for the record attempt, according to the report.
