SCHEFFLER RECOUNTS 2024 ARREST AS BURNS WEARS MUGSHOT SHIRT
Scottie Scheffler said his Presidents Cup teammate Sam Burns wore a T-shirt printed with Scheffler's police mugshot to their team room, according to comments Scheffler made on the Pardon My Take podcast. Speaking to host Dan Katz on the Barstool Sports programme, Scheffler said: "Sam actually wore the T-shirt with my mug shot to our team room last night. The joke continues to stay." The comment referred to Scheffler's arrest in May 2024, which took place hours before he played a round at the PGA Championship. Scheffler raised the episode himself in the days before the Presidents Cup team event began.
Scheffler was arrested on the morning of 17 May 2024 outside Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, shortly before the second round of the PGA Championship. A tournament shuttle bus had been involved in a fatal collision with a pedestrian outside the course at around 5am, prompting police to close roads and reroute traffic. Running late for his tee time, Scheffler drove a player courtesy vehicle past Detective Bryan Gillis, who had stopped him to give instructions; police said he failed to comply, accelerated, and dragged the officer to the ground, causing minor injuries. Scheffler's attorney said it was a misunderstanding and that Scheffler believed he was following directions, not realising the man in the yellow jacket was a police officer. He was charged with four offences, including felony second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals, and was released without bail. He returned to the course in time to warm up and shot a five-under-par 66 that afternoon, and prosecutors later dropped all the charges against him.
Scheffler is due to play alongside Burns in Thursday's opening four-ball matches at Medinah, according to tee times published for the event. That opening session comprises five four-ball, or best-ball, matches in total. Scheffler, described as the world number one, has continued to treat the 2024 arrest as a running joke with Burns rather than an unresolved matter, given that prosecutors dropped every charge against him. Burns revived the mugshot reference in the team room the night before the pair were due to play together.
