MAHERSHALA ALI AGREES BLADE CANCELLATION WAS FEIGE'S BIGGEST FAILURE
Mahershala Ali has discussed the cancellation of Marvel Studios' Blade reboot, saying he agrees with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige that scrapping the project was the biggest failure of Feige's career. Speaking to GQ's One More Question, Ali said he still does not know why the film never happened, telling the interviewer it was "a Kevin Feige question". Ali was announced as taking over the role of Blade, originated by Wesley Snipes, at Comic-Con in 2019. The project faced repeated delays before Marvel confirmed its cancellation last month. Feige had earlier told the Happy Sad Confused podcast in July that he felt "like a gigantic loser and failure" for not getting the reboot off the ground with Ali, despite being pleased Marvel brought Snipes back for an appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Ali described spending a year preparing for the role, training in multiple martial arts and sword work until he injured his knee. He said he and his family relocated to Atlanta to be ready to begin filming, only for the start date to be repeatedly pushed back. Ali said the months-long SAG-AFTRA strike in 2023 further disrupted the production timeline. Flying Lotus had previously been announced as the composer set to score the film before it was shelved. Ali, a two-time Oscar winner known for Moonlight and Green Book, said he was actively preparing throughout the delays rather than holding back his effort.
Neither Ali nor Feige gave a specific reason for the project's collapse in the interview. Feige's podcast comments and Ali's response to them mark the first detailed public acknowledgement from either party of how the cancellation affected them personally. No replacement project or future plans for the character have been confirmed by Marvel Studios. Fans reacted to the August cancellation announcement with criticism online, according to social media posts cited in coverage of the story.
