ZELENSKYY OFFERS ENERGY CEASEFIRE AS NATO WARNS OVER PUTIN
Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine is ready for "any kind of format of energy ceasefire" with Russia, following talks with Donald Trump at UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday. Zelenskyy said he would halt Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy targets if Moscow agreed not to attack Ukraine's energy system, and said he hoped the American side would help bring Russia to negotiations. He said he remained open to a trilateral meeting with Trump and Vladimir Putin. Trump told the UN General Assembly he was working with both sides to end the war and expected a resolution "more quickly than people understand." The talks come as US-led efforts to end the four-year war have stalled amid a shift in Washington's focus towards Iran.
Zelenskyy told the Wall Street Journal the war would end if Trump increased pressure on Putin and if China and India stopped buying Russian oil, saying this would leave Moscow without enough money to continue fighting. He said Russian energy sales to China, India and Turkey were sustaining Russia's economy. Zelenskyy also met Andy Burnham in New York, who said he had urged Trump to press for an energy ceasefire and pledged further UK financial support for Ukrainian infrastructure. Separately, Nato's deputy commander in Europe, Air Chief Marshal Sir John Stringer, said Putin was becoming "increasingly cavalier, dangerous and risk accepting" as the war continued.
Stringer, speaking at a security conference in Estonia, said Nato members should be alert to a "febrile environment" and respond carefully, since Putin sought to provoke an "overreaction." Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said Russia could target Nato states with drone or missile strikes disguised as accidents, while French President Emmanuel Macron has asked his government to prepare defences against drone and cyberattacks on infrastructure. A tracking map cited by one report recorded a rise from 59 such incidents in March 2025 to more than 210, including a foiled drone plot at Leipzig airport and a disrupted plan to sabotage a drone factory near London.
