LUTKENHAUS BEATS WANYONYI IN 800M AT OSLO DIAMOND LEAGUE
American Cooper Lutkenhaus defeated Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi in the men's 800m at the Diamond League meeting in Oslo, Norway. The 17-year-old recorded a personal best of one minute 42.08 seconds, finishing one hundredth of a second ahead of the Kenyan. Wanyonyi crossed the line in 1:42.09, his fastest time of the season. Lutkenhaus had entered the race unbeaten across five 800m finals in 2026.
The Oslo victory extended a remarkable run for Lutkenhaus, who claimed gold at the World Indoor Championships and became the Diamond League's youngest ever winner on his debut in Stockholm the previous weekend. Wanyonyi had missed the Stockholm meeting following the birth of his first child. The Kenyan said he had targeted a season best rather than specifically focussing on his young rival. Elsewhere on the evening, British sprinter Amy Hunt finished second in the women's 100m in 10.99 seconds, with St Lucia's Olympic champion Julien Alfred taking victory in 10.76.
Ethiopian runner Freweyni Hailu recorded the fastest women's 3,000m time in the world this year, clocking 8:24.22, with British pair Megan Keith and Innes Fitzgerald finishing seventh and ninth respectively. Norway's Karsten Warholm ran 47.40 in the men's 400m hurdles but finished second behind Brazil's Alison dos Santos, who won in 46.89. Australia's Gout Gout finished sixth in the 200m on his Diamond League debut, with reigning Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo taking victory in 19.84. Gout clocked 20.60, well short of the Australian record of 19.67 he set in April.
