STUDENT ARRESTED AFTER SHOOTING INJURES SEVERAL AT TURKISH SCHOOL

TUE 22 SEP 2026 CRIME

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested after a shooting outside a secondary school in western Turkey left several people injured. The gunman opened fire on Tuesday morning outside Inci Uzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian Secondary school in Manisa province before fleeing. One report said at least 11 people were hurt, while another put the figure at eight or more; both said two of the injured were in critical condition. CCTV footage showed the suspect, reported to be a student at the school, checking a shotgun in the street before the attack, then running from the scene with the weapon. Turkey's justice minister, Akın Gürlek, said the suspect's mother, father and grandfather were also detained.

The motive was not immediately clear, and Turkish police have launched an investigation. Under Turkish law, the teenager must appear in court before formal arrest. Turkey's education ministry said the attack had "deeply saddened our nation, and our educational community in particular" and confirmed it had sent three national investigators to Manisa. The shooting is the third recorded at a Turkish school this year, in a country that had no history of such attacks before 2026.

The attack follows two fatal school shootings in Turkey in April, which led the government to introduce tighter gun controls and new security measures for the current academic year. In one of those attacks, in Kahramanmaras, a 14-year-old shot dead nine students aged 10 and 11 and one teacher, and the gunman died at the scene. The shooting comes as Turkey's government continues to address a spate of school violence this year. No further details of the case, including any potential charges against the teenager, have yet been released.
