ROBERT LLOYD JAILED FOR LIFE OVER 1994 MOSTON MURDER
A man has been jailed for life after walking into a police station and admitting his part in a killing that happened more than 30 years ago, Greater Manchester Police said. Robert Lloyd, from Denton in Tameside, confessed to officers his involvement in the murder of Michael McDermott in Moston, Manchester, in November 1994. He was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court in March to a minimum of 17 years after pleading guilty to murder. A judge lifted reporting restrictions on the case at a hearing at the same court on Monday, after they had remained in place while inquiries continued.
According to Greater Manchester Police, McDermott was attacked by a group of masked men armed with baseball bats and knives at a relative's home on Ashville Terrace. The attackers forced their way through the front door at around 10.30pm on 9 November 1994 and inflicted several injuries, including stab wounds, as McDermott lay on a sofa. The group then ran across the road through a ginnel onto Oakville Terrace, where a vehicle was waiting to drive them away. Lloyd's confession, made last October, led detectives from the force's major investigation team to reopen the case.
Detective Inspector Rachel Smith, of the major investigation team, said McDermott's death had been devastating for his loved ones and had left unanswered questions for three decades. She said she hoped the sentencing would give the family a sense of reassurance and peace, adding that they continue to be supported by specialist officers. Smith said the investigation remains active and urged anyone with information to come forward. Greater Manchester Police asked anyone with information to contact the force or report anonymously through the charity Crimestoppers.
