EAGLES COACH NEEDS IV AS TITANS STADIUM TURF HITS 157F

The Philadelphia Eagles beat the Tennessee Titans 24-20 at Nissan Stadium in Nashville on Sunday, on artificial turf that reportedly reached 157 degrees Fahrenheit. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said he needed an intravenous drip for dehydration and did not take the field. Sirianni, quoted by ESPN, described the conditions as extremely hot, saying he had not played a single snap but still required an IV. He praised his players for how they prepared for and fought through conditions he said had not been easy.

Air temperature at the stadium reached around 95 degrees Fahrenheit, with a heat index of about 105 degrees, and the turf had reportedly absorbed heat over recent weeks. Eagles offensive lineman Cam Jurgens said he felt a burning sensation on his feet during and after the match, and changed his cleats several times at halftime after they melted. He compared the halftime scene to a NASCAR pit crew helping him prepare for the second half, saying the turf was radiating heat. Cameras showed a Titans player spraying water on his cleats to cool them during the game.

The game renewed a long-running debate within the NFL over grass versus artificial turf, with 16 of the league's 30 fields currently using natural grass. The NFL Players Association has been pushing for grass to be made compulsory league-wide. Eagles left tackle Jordan Mailata, the NFLPA's player representative in 2025, has long supported natural grass and opposed turf surfaces. Mailata said he had never considered how hot turf stadiums could become, describing the heat as sitting on the surface and bouncing back up at players. He said the league needed to address the issue.
