YU ZIDI SETS ASIAN GAMES RECORD IN WOMEN'S 200M BUTTERFLY

MON 21 SEP 2026 INTERNATIONAL

Yu Zidi, a Chinese swimmer who turns 14 next month, won the women's 200m butterfly at the Asian Games in Tokyo on Sunday, setting a Games record of two minutes 5.08 seconds. It was the first major title of her career, coming less than two years before the Los Angeles Olympics. Yu described her performance as "only so-so" after receiving her medal. The race came on the first full day of competition, a day after Emperor Naruhito officially opened the Games. Swimming is one of three sports being held in Tokyo, with the rest of the event taking place in Nagoya and Aichi prefecture.

Yu became the youngest medallist in swimming world championships history last year, winning relay bronze aged 12. China took six of the seven swimming titles on offer on the opening day and is expected to remain the leading force in the pool. More than 11,000 athletes and 6,000 officials are taking part in the Games, competing across more than 40 sports over a fortnight before it closes on 4 October. Places for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics are among the prizes on offer.

Organisers chose not to build a traditional athletes' village to save money, housing competitors instead in temporary container-style huts, hotels and aboard the Costa Serena cruise ship. International Olympic Committee president Kirsty Coventry called the huts "beautiful" after visiting them on Sunday, though she said they were "a little tighter" than accommodation used at this year's Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. The build-up to the Games included complaints about accommodation and a shortage of rooms. A typhoon brought heavy rain to Tokyo on Sunday, closing the venue due to host equestrian events.
