MARTIN O'NEILL TO REFLECT ON CELTIC FUTURE AFTER RANGERS DEFEAT

SUN 20 SEP 2026 FOOTBALL

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill said he will reflect on his future after a third defeat in a week, a Scottish Premiership loss to Rangers. Speaking at a news conference at Celtic Park, he said the result raised the question of whether he could still help the team. O'Neill, who returned to manage Celtic last season, said he would consider the matter and speak to the club's board this week. He joked he would be "110 years old in two years' time" and that "it might be time to wrap it up."

The defeat capped a difficult week in which Celtic also lost 3-0 to Rangers in the Premier Sports Cup at Ibrox and were beaten at home by Ferencvaros in their Europa League opener, according to reports. Celtic remained top of the Scottish Premiership. One report said Celtic's summer transfer business has drawn scrutiny, noting that midfielder Arne Engels left without being directly replaced. The club raised around £40 million from player sales over the summer, and the same report said several incoming deals were loan signings of younger players.

O'Neill previously managed Celtic in the early 2000s, when he came close to winning the Uefa Cup in 2003 against a Porto side managed by Jose Mourinho, who won the Champions League with Porto the following season. He returned to Celtic last season and led the club to a Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup double, sealing the title with a last-day win over Hearts. O'Neill described that match as "probably one of the great moments" of his time as a manager. He said he would speak to Celtic's board this week before deciding on his future.
