GUNFIRE NEAR NOTRE DAME STADIUM INJURES TWO AMID POLICE SEARCH

SUN 20 SEP 2026

Gunfire erupted near Notre Dame Stadium shortly after kickoff of the university's home game against Michigan State on Saturday night, according to the university's ND Alert emergency system. Two people were injured, including a police officer, and taken to hospital, according to a report citing local broadcaster WNDU; both were expected to recover. Police searched for a suspect described in the alert as a Black male, heavy-set, wearing blue shorts, a black shirt and one white shoe, last seen on the south edge of campus. Fans inside the stadium were told to remain inside, while people in the surrounding area were told to shelter in place.

The gunfire happened near the intersection of Angela Boulevard and Eddy Street, at Eddy Street Commons, a commercial area on the campus's southern edge in Indiana, according to the alert. The area was busy with fans before kickoff despite rain, as crowds gathered ahead of the game against Michigan State. ND Alert, Notre Dame's emergency notification system, warns students by text, email and phone, according to the university. Investigators believe the officer was struck by a ricochet or flying fragments, according to the report citing WNDU. Police said the suspect was believed to have fled the scene on foot.

Police continued to search for the suspect after the alert was issued, with no arrest reported. The suspect had not been located as of the last update, the alert said. The university did not report any threat inside Notre Dame Stadium itself, and the game against Michigan State continued despite the security response outside the grounds. Notre Dame's emergency protocols instruct people inside the stadium to remain there while officers search for a suspect, according to the university.
