NIGERIA'S FLAMINGOS BEAT GHANA'S BLACK MAIDENS 4-2 IN WAFU CUP
Nigeria's Flamingos beat Ghana's Black Maidens 4-2 in Yamoussoukro, Côte d'Ivoire, in their second match at the 2026 WAFU B U17 Girls Cup. Oluwakemi Adegbuyi, Harmony Chidi, Mary Dunstan and Kaosarat Akanji scored for Nigeria, who played the last 31 minutes with 10 players after Elizabeth Adesuyi was sent off. The result gives Nigeria two wins from two games, after a 5-0 win over Niger Republic. Ghana's Seidatu Wahab and Gloria Ameaa scored for the Black Maidens, who had beaten Burkina Faso 4-0 in their own opener. The match renewed a rivalry from the 2024 final, which Ghana won on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
Adegbuyi put Nigeria ahead in the 33rd minute, and captain Chidi doubled the lead in first-half stoppage time. Adesuyi received a straight red card in the 59th minute for fouling a Ghanaian attacker as the last defender. Wahab scored from the resulting free-kick three minutes later to make it 2-1. Dunstan restored Nigeria's two-goal advantage in the 70th minute, and Akanji added a fourth from a free-kick in the 87th minute. Ameaa's goal in the 90th minute completed the scoring at 4-2.
The win keeps Nigeria unbeaten after two matches, as coach Hakeem Busari's side prepare for the FIFA U17 Women's World Cup in Morocco. Adegbuyi, who plays for FC Robo Queens, was also part of the Edo Queens team that won the WAFU B CAF Women's Champions League qualifiers in September and was named that tournament's best player. Chidi, Nigeria's captain, scored twice against Niger Republic and a hat-trick against Guinea during Nigeria's 2026 FIFA U17 Women's World Cup qualifying campaign. Ghana's Black Maidens suffered their first defeat of the tournament.
