BRIGHTON BEAT ARSENAL 3-0 AT AMEX STADIUM
Brighton & Hove Albion beat Arsenal 3-0 at the Amex Stadium, handing the visitors their first Premier League defeat of the season. Pascal Gross opened the scoring after around 30 minutes, striking into the bottom right corner from the edge of the box. Charalampos Kostoulas doubled the lead with a shot from 25 yards after being given time to shoot, and new signing Chema Andres headed in a third goal from a corner delivered by Gross in the second half. The win lifted Brighton to third in the Premier League table, two points behind Arsenal, while Arsenal dropped out of top spot heading into the international break.
Brighton had been underdogs against Arsenal, the reigning champions, but Arsenal produced what was described as a below-par display in conceding three goals. The win continued a strong run of form for Brighton under manager Fabian Hurzeler, who also beat Manchester United in the Carabao Cup earlier this season. Brighton supporters at the Amex Stadium mocked Arsenal during the match, chanting "Are you Tottenham in disguise?" and "You're having a laugh, you're having a laugh, Champions of England, you're having a laugh!" Arsenal supporter and broadcaster Piers Morgan responded to the chants afterwards, comparing Arsenal's performance to that of rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Arsenal's defeat leaves Manchester City top of the Premier League, with City holding a game in hand over Arsenal. Arsenal will look to respond when fixtures resume after the international break, as they seek to defend their title. Separately, pundit Paul Merson criticised midfielder Bruno Guimaraes's performance following the match, saying he had been "a million miles off it". Brighton, now third in the table, will hope to build on the result as their season continues.
