MCILROY TWO SHOTS OFF WENTWORTH LEAD AFTER THIRD ROUND

SAT 19 SEP 2026 GOLF

Manuel Elvira of Spain and Filippo Celli of Italy share the lead at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth after both carded birdies on the final hole of round three to reach 13 under par, according to the BBC. Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland sits two shots back on 11 under after an eagle on the 18th capped a round of 72 in windy conditions. The tournament, played on the West Course at Wentworth, moves into its final round on Sunday with McIlroy among a large group still in contention. Spain's Alejandro Del Rey, JJ Spaun of the United States and Johannes Veerman of the United States are a single stroke behind the leaders on 12 under.

The leaderboard remains tightly bunched, with 20 players within four strokes of Elvira and Celli heading into the last day, the BBC reported. Australia's Adam Scott shares McIlroy's mark of 11 under, while England's Sam Bairstow and Matt Wallace, alongside Scotland's Robert MacIntyre, sit on 10 under. Jordan Smith, Matt Fitzpatrick and Aaron Rai of England are on 9 under, with Ross Fisher of England and Ireland's Shane Lowry on 7 under. McIlroy said the blustery weather over the tournament's opening days had prevented anyone from pulling clear of the field.

McIlroy is seeking a record-equalling eighth Race to Dubai title and would also claim a second Wentworth title of his career with victory on Sunday, the BBC noted. He said he intended to avoid checking leaderboards during the front nine of his final round and would play more aggressively on the back nine if required. Sky Sports separately confirmed that Elvira and Celli moved a shot clear of the field with their birdies on the 18th. The final round is scheduled for Sunday, with McIlroy and the chasing pack set for what the BBC described as an close finish.
