YORKSHIRE BEAT SOMERSET BY 185 RUNS IN COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

FRI 18 SEP 2026 CRICKET

Yorkshire beat Somerset by 185 runs on the fourth day of their County Championship Division One match at Headingley, bowling Somerset out for 101 in the second innings. Somerset had resumed the day needing 287 to win from an overnight 73-3, but slipped to 79-6 and were all out before midday. Ben Cliff took eight wickets in Somerset's first innings and three more in the second, finishing with career-best match figures of 11-105, while Ben Coad took four wickets in the run chase. It was Somerset's third defeat of the season and their second against Yorkshire.

Yorkshire had set the target after being bowled out for 275, with Hill scoring 89 and Dom Bess, formerly of Somerset, making 77; Craig Overton took 3-44 for the visitors. On the final morning, Cliff and Coad struck within five balls of each other, removing Tom Lammonby, caught behind for 32, and Tom Abell, caught at backward point, as Somerset slipped to 76-5. James Rew was then caught at second slip off Coad. Overton, who had made an unbeaten 79 against Yorkshire in a Vitality Blast quarter-final at Headingley in July, was caught behind off Cliff for five, before Lewis Gregory was out lbw, leaving Somerset on 88-8.

The result leaves Warwickshire leading Division One by 11 points from second-placed Somerset, who have never won the County Championship title. Nottinghamshire remain in contention for the title ahead of next week's final round, even if they lose to Sussex. For Yorkshire, who sit mid-table, it was a fifth win in 13 games this season, following victory over Somerset at Taunton in May. Cliff's match figures of 11-105 rank as the 13th-best in Yorkshire's first-class history.
