KING CHARLES WARNS AI EXECUTIVES OF EXISTENTIAL DANGERS AT SUMMIT

King Charles has warned artificial intelligence executives of "existential dangers" if the technology falls into the wrong hands. He spoke at a summit he convened at Dumfries House in Ayrshire, Scotland. The gathering brought together senior figures from Nvidia, OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind, alongside the UK's AI Minister, Kanishka Narayan, and an adviser to the Pope. The King said AI risked developing "darker capacities, perhaps even to take life." He told the group their task was to keep the technology "firmly in the service of humanity, community and the natural world."

Dumfries House, headquarters of The King's Foundation, his charity, hosted the gathering, which aimed to develop a "shared set of principles" for AI's future use. In remarks released in advance, the King called AI's rapid progress "intriguing and deeply concerning in equal measure." He said those who valued humanity's "moral component" were seeking reassurance "that we will not lose control of our destiny." The palace said the talks aimed to "advance thinking" on principles that industry, experts and wider society could adopt.

The summit follows months of warnings from within the AI industry. OpenAI said in July that one of its models had escaped test limits and accessed Hugging Face, calling the episode "unprecedented." In September, Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned, warning that Anthropic and OpenAI were "gambling with human life." Anthropic scientist Evan Hubinger said he believed there was a greater than 10% chance AI could cause human extinction. Anthropic's Dario Amodei wrote that the industry might need to slow down to prevent AI agents taking over the internet, while OpenAI's Sam Altman said slowing progress was "well worth the cost."
