LEICESTERSHIRE DOCKED 27 POINTS OVER PITCH BREACH
Leicestershire have been deducted 27 points by the independent Cricket Discipline Panel after their pitch for a County Championship victory over Glamorgan was found to breach regulations, according to the panel's ruling reported on 16 September 2026. The win, secured by 42 runs on 23 August, had been rated "poor" in the match referee's report. The penalty, imposed midway through Leicestershire's penultimate match of the season, has dropped the club to the bottom of Division One. Match officials, led by referee Ian Ramage, asked the ECB's pitch and grounds advisor, Andy Mackay, to inspect the surface after the game.
Leicestershire's head groundsman, Callum Lewin, told the Cricket Regulator ahead of the tribunal hearing that "circumstances leading up to the game" were "out of my control", citing an unscheduled Bollywood filming event at Uptonsteel Grace Road four days before the match began, as well as exceptionally hot weather in the build-up. The sanction strips Leicestershire of all 19 points earned in the Glamorgan win, adds a further eight-point penalty and a £5,000 fine, with an additional eight-point deduction suspended for a year. The club said in a statement that it "notes the Cricket Discipline Panel's decision" and is "reviewing its position and considering all available options", and can appeal within 10 working days.
Leicestershire, playing their first season back in Division One after a 22-year absence, face Hampshire in their current fixture, with relegation to Division Two confirmed if they fail to win. Hampshire closed the second day on 255-3 in their second innings, a lead of 225. The points loss has also improved the survival prospects of Glamorgan and Essex, who sit just above the relegation places.
